How (and how NOT!) to Handle a Kitchen Oil Fire

(No, this isn't deja vu. This is a Greatest Hits edition of WFMW. Back by popular demand . . . well, actually, I chose this one because so many of you didn't watch it the first time! You NEED to watch this. Now. I mean it! These short 34 seconds could save your life! Then scroll down for the GIVEAWAY!)

Quick! Your frying pan full of hot oil just caught fire! What do you do?

Think you know the right answer? Better be sure - watch this!!!!!

I have a whole bank of my cleverest ideas saved up for future Works for Me Wednesday posts. They were all put on the back burner when a friend forwarded this video (sorry, the pun was irresistible!). This is VERY short (only 34 seconds long)! It might save your life!

If the above video won't play, try watching it at this link:

Thanks to Bobby and EllaJo for forwarding this!

Now . . . on to the giveaway! I just discovered these GREAT t-shirts and notecards for moms at LTDChix.com. They’re a riot! The shirts depict an overwhelmed mom in various situations, smiling her way through daily life with the accompanying caption, “Living the Dream”.

Here are a few words adapted from the LTDChix website which sum up their slogan:

What had happened to that idyllic dream of being the perfect mom with the perfect kids and the perfect life? This is it! We are Living the Dream. Being a Mom really is tough sometimes, we’re faced fairly often with some pretty insane and chaotic situations, and WE LOVE IT! We wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Here's how to enter the giveaway:

1) Head over to LTDChix and check out all their great products, which include t-shirts, long sleeved tees, and notecards.

2) Leave a comment on this post, telling me which 3 moms you like and can relate to the most. Even better, be creative and explain why!

3) The winner will be announced Friday, April 11th. The best comment wins a t-shirt or tank (depending on stock) and will get to choose one of three selections that LTDChix provides.

My personal favorite is Laundry Mom (here's why):

I also love Minivan Mom, Referee Mom and Cooking Mom. The pictures are priceless! The child hanging off the arm of Cooking Mom must be my 2 year old, Screech! And I constantly have to act as a referee for Pete and Drama Queen!

Wow -- very sad. :(

I had always heard that you were supposed to put flour on a grease fire to put it out.

FrazzMom said...

When I was newly married I learned (the hard way) that you can use baking soda to put out a grease fire, but NOT flour.

Flour is actually flammable and will ignite!

Fortunately- I had a fire extinguisher under the sink and knew how to use it... I was a big mess to clean up later, but kept the fire from spreading from the pan to my kitchen... Or worse!

I had this happen years ago, and dumped a canister of salt on it, and it put it right out. Now I have a fire extinguisher right on the wall. Thanks for that video, that is great. I'm passing that along. :)

I remember learning this and about using baking soda but to see what actually happens when water is thrown on it.

I'll have to check it out later (my computer is too slow to watch videos on. time to get a new 'puter!). Thanks for sharing

Good tip. We have a fire extinguisher in our kitchen next to the stove. Deprivation of oxygen is a must. For a situation like this, you could also cover with the lid of the pan, but the wet cloth idea is even better as it protects you as you cover the fire. And I have used salt on an oven fire once long, long ago and it put it out.

You have done a great service today. Angie, Frazzmom is right! My husband (who is a safety inspector for a big insurance company) says many of the biggest fires they've had claims for involve graineries or places where flour is milled. Baking soda is always your best ticket, if you can't just pop a lid over the pot and smother the oxygen.
Let's all stay safe!

Thank you!!!!!!! I could almost smell the burn as that fire ignited.

Thanks for the reminder. I always worry I will panic and do the wrong thing in an emergency.

Thanks for the video. I will share it with my family and friends. I have been through a house fire and I can say from my experience that the only thing you can rely on in an emergency situation is your instinct. If you have rehearsed ahead of time exactly what you will do in a house fire situation, you will know what to do if it happens to you. When you come face to face with a wall of flames, you won't have time to think, "Hmmm...should I use the flour? The baking soda? Hmmm...what should I do?" You have to act FAST. That is why fire safety education is so vital! Thank you for sharing this very important message!!!

I saw this WFMW when you originally posted it. Definitely an eye opener!
As for the t-shirts I like the shopping one (I take all 6 kids with me to do all my grocery shopping and errands), Laundry (I do 10+ loads a week and it never seems to slow) and referee (My oldest two are boy and girl and they seem to annoy the mess out of each other!)

I'd love the beach one - we're going to a hippie beach wedding for my cousin in June..... that should be interesting - taking 2 kids to the beach for a wedding and expecting them to sit quietly and not kick sand on everyone or run for the water. Also love Minivan mom. That's going to be me come fall when Blondie is going to be taking soccer and we're looking to put Bear into something as well. Thirdly I love the cleaning mom. Or... non-cleaning mom is more like it for me! lol.

I like the working, cooking, and fitness mom t-shirts because they all remind me of me!

I feel like a Laundry mom, Referee mom and cooking mom. AY Yi Yi!

I love the "Laundry Mom" shirt the best though.

I am working mom as I try to do accounts from home
In between toys, drinks and snacks, craving thinking time alone

I am cooking mom, juggling toddlers, pans and phones
Having dinner done and kids all bathed before hubby gets home

I am fitness mom, trying to add muscle to bone
When I get the time that is, If ever the other jobs are done

But even though I'm all these things, when all is said and done
I don’t mind even a little bit cause I am their mom.

I am referee mom (my oldest 2 feel the need to comment/correct everything the other does CON.STANT.LY!), laundry mom (your picture looks very familiar!), and cooking mom (it never goes as planned, especially with all the helpers!). Great shirts!!

Referee mom since I'm always making calls on my two oldest kids. Laundry mom since my son has learned to pick out his clothes and get himself dressed. Cleaning mom because with 3 kids that's what I always need to be doing (notice I said "need to be"). :)

I had heard what can happen when you try to put out an oil fire with water, but seeing it...frightening! Thanks for the tip.
As for the shirts, I feel that I need to own either the working mom shirt or notecards. Driving carpool to school before work usually involves handing my kids a breakfast in the backseat(dry cereal or one time my son grabbed garlic cloves!?) and sometimes having my kids brush their teeth in the car with a cup of water and an open window (definitely a car wash day). I sometimes wonder how other frazzled working moms do it and stay sane. Maybe it's wearing a darling shirt as an homage. My third choice would, of course, be the laundry mom. I have tried to convince my kids that the TV only works when you are folding laundry on the couch. Still working on that.

Good tip. I thought you just covered the flame with the lid of the pan, but I guess the wet towel is better.

Now, on to my favorite shirts. I love: Fitness Mom because I'm really trying to get into shape, and now I'm actually up to 3 miles on the old treadmill three times a week. I'm trying to jog, but it's mostly walking.

Also shopping mom, because honestly, I love a good bargain. I don't really enjoy shopping with the kids, because they disturb my bargain finding abilities (as the shirt well shows).

And Referee Mom, because with 5 kids, I feel like I'm only a referee sometimes.

Wow, thanks for the video, I didn't realize you needed to put a wet towel on the pan, scary!!
I really like the shopping t-shirt, because I hate to shop, it always upsets me when they total everything up. I also like the laundry tee, that is to cute! My favorite is the cooking tee, because I love to cook.

My favorite is the Laundry Mom.... I HATE laundry but it never goes away.

2. Cooking- another necessary evil

3. Shopping- I do enjoy grocery shopping just not with kids.
